Market Risk Officer

The Market Risk Officer builds models that analyze the risk and return profiles of primary asset classes to drive investment views, understands fundamental sources of risk for the general account and enterprise, and assists in the production of enhanced surveillance and risk reports for the general account and enterprise. As a recognized thought leader both within and outside the organization in market risk, this job analyzes investment risks within each major asset class, including: credit risk, equity risk, country/geographical concentration, currency risk, off-balance sheet risk and derivatives risk.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develops for each asset class a view on fundamental risk drivers within an asset class.

  • Develops asset class specific surveillance and risk reporting frameworks.

  • Drives the analysis for benchmark selection/derivation for risk budgeting.

  • Determines and models risk limit framework across the appropriate investment risks.

  • Analyzes the enterprise wide risk profile for undue concentrations of risk.

  • Works across the various functions in risk management to ensure that risk calculations and sensitivity analysis are based on reasonable, fundamentals oriented intuition.

  • Reviews and approves complex and significant investment and market risk management processes under the organization's global risk framework, embedding appropriate risk management systems and models in order to drive best practices in risk management reporting and solutions.

  • Master's or PHD preferred

  • Bachelor Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Finance or Physics

  • Experience with programming languages, Python, Matlab or R

  • Experience with Fixed Income or Alternative Assets


  • Support the implementation of the strategy for the modeling of TIAA’s invested assets used in the asset liability projection model that supports actuarial modeling applications

  • Develop, maintain, and support the existing asset models, such as: perform regular updates and production of model results as required by business need, implement enhancements to models as directed by Team lead and business leaders

  • Develop market data adapters for security and reference data for providers like Reuters, Bloomberg, Intex etc., in order to recalibrate models in a timely manner

  • Coordinate with other internal teams in Actuarial, IT, Risk Management to understand requirements and automate systems

Potential Salary: $199,025.00 USD

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).
