TIAA Lead Data Scientist in CHARLOTTE, North Carolina

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief Data Office (CDO) is actively looking for a Lead Data Scientist to join the Data Science team. This position will lead machine learning & deep learning initiatives focused on solving enterprise problems and establishing responsible and efficient AI systems. This role is a vital contributor to our practice and will be directly accountable for leading team members and projects through the research, development, validation, and deployment of our models and algorithms. The successful candidate must be highly analytical and possess a strong passion for data science and accountability, setting high standards, and providing high-quality results. The Lead Data Scientist will have demonstrated experience as a master problem-solver, working directly with business and product leadership and act as a mentor to other data scientists. This position will require a superior ability to understand business problems in context, perform research, and lead our global team, facing challenges together as one team to deliver value for our customers. The ideal candidate will be aware of changes in the industry as it relates to new research and machine learning techniques and software, and contribute to discussion in the data science community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Lead the end-to-end research & development of data science initiatives and experiments, and manage a project portfolio of work within the data science team

  • Applies mastery understanding of machine learning to solve business problems pertaining to segmentation, classification, estimation, matching, optimization, natural language, validation, testing, and monitoring.

  • Work directly with business leadership to structure business problems and drive viable, data-driven hypotheses during strategic planning and for ad-hoc projects

  • Take full accountability of their own and others’ data analysis, predictive modeling, and developed systems, and present a clear, accurate interpretation of results to the business

  • Effectively manages expectations and communicates results with leadership throughout the end-to-end data science lifecycle

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Skills

  • M.S. in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) or Economics related field of study

  • 5 or more years working with statistical methods such as regressions, classifiers, recommenders, anomaly detection, and optimization algorithms, tree methods, neural nets, econometrics, linear algebra, parametric/non-parametric modeling, etc.

  • 5 or more years working with programming languages such as R, Python, SAS, SQL and related statistical packages, along with tools like jupyter notebooks, shiny, Tableau, D3, ggplot, matplotlib, seaborn

  • 3 or more years communicating and presenting results to business and technical leadership using tools such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Markdown

  • 3 or more years applying Agile and/or research & development (R&D) project methodologies to manage data science projects, tasks, deliverables, and timelines.

  • 2 or more years team leadership

Preferred Skills

  • PhD in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) or Economics related field of study

  • 5 or more years leading team members and data science projects, managing tasks, deliverables, and milestones

  • 3 or more years working with model risk management teams and understanding model risk

  • 3 or more years with noSQL unstructured data stores (Hadoop, MongoDB, Neo4j, ElasticSearch, etc.)

  • 2 or more years with modern data engineering like kafka, spark, ETL, APIs, feedback loops, web triggers or tagging
