TIAA Technical Accounting and Research Manager Sr in CHARLOTTE, North Carolina
As a part of TIAA’s Financial Solutions business, TIAA Bank, a division of TIAA, FSB, provides full-service, nationwide banking and lending services to consumer, commercial and institutional clients through a variety of channels, including online, its Florida-based financial centers and at other business offices throughout the country.
Technical expert on accounting issues across multiple areas of the firm with strategic focus on financial institutions and mortgage banks, as well as, insurance, asset management, broker-dealer, investment advisors, joint ventures and investment funds. Subject matter expertise to include complex accounting areas such as derivatives and hedge accounting, fair value, equity transactions, acquisition accounting, revenue recognition, allowance for loan loss, expected credit loss and other mortgage accounting issues.
•Perform and direct technical research to address accounting questions and transactions among business partners and facilitate with departments to ensure proper accounting process implementation.
•Monitor accounting literature for new reporting requirements that potentially impact the Company and report new developments to management on a periodic basis.
•Manage the implementation of changes to current accounting practices as dictated by changes in accounting and reporting requirements. Includes risk analysis of new and existing accounting guidance, developing and implementing accounting policies, and providing advice and issuing policy guidelines on technical accounting issues.
•Assist the external financial reporting department with new reporting requirements as identified under new ASU’s.
•Prepare and manage the creation and update of accounting policies.
•Prepare and manage the review, communication, and deadlines related to significant transactions within the Company.
•Responsible for the management, performance and training of technical accounting department.
•Review inception and ongoing documentation of certain critical accounting areas provided by business units such as hedge documentation, other than temporary impairment, fair value, allowance for loan loss, expected credit losses etc.
•Assist accounting policy team engagement and thought leadership on emerging accounting and regulatory issues (U.S. STAT, U.S. GAAP, IFRS, SEC, FINRA, OCC, FRBB, PCAOB, among others) through various trade association representation (ACLI, NAIC, IPs, ICI, NCREIF, SIFMA, RMA, BMA, AICPA Experts Panels, among others).
•Assist global controllership initiatives around accounting policy, including company’s posture on U.S. STAT, U.S. GAAP, IFRS, SEC, AICPA, PCAOB, OCC, FRBB, FINRA etc.
•Primarily responsible for implementation and technical administration for all new and existing applicable regulatory accounting guidance, with banking focus, as well as technical consultation for leaders of the company across multiple disciplines (e.g., front office, middle office, back office, reporting, operations) on complex transactions and new ventures.

•Excellent ability to train others
• Bachelor’s degree required in accounting, finance or related business area
• CPA required
• Minimum 5+ years of accounting/finance
•Banking, mortgage, insurance company and/or financial services industry experience preferred
•Oracle Financials experience preferred
•Current experience in public filing and reporting preferred
