Nuveen Investments Nuveen Natural Capital - Water Resources Manager in Fresno, California

Nuveen Natural Capital is seeking a Water Resources Manager to join the Horticulture team, based in Fresno, California. This team is responsible for managing the company's expanding global portfolio of tree crop investments, currently valued at over $1 billion. The bulk of this portfolio is in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. While our relatively small office (less than 10 people) is collegial, this is a strong, efficient team on which everyone is expected to be a reliable contributor.

The position requires expertise in California water, with an emphasis on the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Responsibilities include evaluating the impacts of SGMA, managing existing water supplies, acquiring supplemental surface and groundwater supplies, attending key irrigation district and Groundwater Sustainability Agency meetings, influencing the development of project implementation, interacting with key water district staff and legal counsel to stay informed on policy and legal issues, and overseeing the activities of water consultants.

The Water Resources Manager will report to the Head of Global Horticulture and will work closely with a team of agricultural asset managers and third party crop managers.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Research and evaluate California water and regional impacts relating to SGMA

  • Attend key water district and agency meetings of regional and statewide importanceInfluence policy making and assess management issues and evolving groundwater limitations related to the ongoing implementation of Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs)

  • Develop projects and strategies for dealing with SGMA vis-a-vis the existing portfolio, potential acquisitions and new strategies

  • Manage the water supplies available to the existing portfolio

  • Manage existing water supplies and develop water budgets

  • Develop strategies and implement projects to improve the reliability of existing water supplies

  • Oversee the acquisition of surface and groundwater assets and draft water investment proposals

  • Implement and manage technologies to track, monitor, and optimize water sources and uses

  • Evaluate water rights of properties targeted for acquisition

  • Provide expertise on water costs, reliability, markets, trends, issues and policies

  • Oversee the activities of water consultants

  • Contribute to broader sustainability, technology and data management efforts across the business

Educational Requirements

  • University (Degree) Preferred

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years’ experience in water management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience in water management

  • BA/BS Degree in Resource Economics, Resource Management, or related discipline

  • Knowledge and familiarity with Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Advanced Excel skills

  • Knowledge and familiarity with agriculture, California water law and the operations of the major water projects and water districts in the State

  • Knowledge and familiarity with financial concepts and modeling

  • Ability to identify and evaluate water investment opportunities including negotiation and research/report writing

Base Pay Range: $112,500/yr. - $155,000/yr.

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).
