Nuveen Investments Head of Investment Europe HAST in London, United Kingdom

Overview of the RoleÂ

The primary purpose of the role is to manage the pan-European Housing investment programme within Nuveen’s growing Housing, Alternatives and Strategic Transactions (“HAST”) Team. The HAST Team in Europe has a committed portfolio of €2.5bn with significant long-term growth ambitions – briven by both internal and external capital.

Operating within Nuveen sector model, the role will report into the Sector Head – Head of Housing, Alternatives & Strategic Transactions, Europe – and form part of the HAST Senior Leadership Team (“SLT”) in Europe alongside the Head of Portfolio Management.Â

The role will require active input into the creation of Housing strategies across Europe with subsequent responsibility for their clinical implementation via the sourcing and execution of suitable investment opportunities – with a strong focus on delivering investment performance. In this context, the candidate will have significant transactional experience in the Housing sector across Europe, across both core and value-add investment strategies, with the ability to execute from “cradle to grave”. In addition to a strong track-record of real estate execution, the candidate should demonstrate the ability to manage multiple stakeholders, investment process approvals and joint venture/operating partners.

The role will take line management responsibility for the existing investment/transaction-focused team members across Europe while equally working with the SLT to attract new talent to the HAST team as the platform grows over time. On this basis, the role will collaborate closely with the local European offices to evaluate, underwrite and oversee the delivery of performance and deployment of capital across all stages of the Housing sector in Europe – while equally supporting Alternative investment strategies. The HAST platform already has strategies launched, or in development, across most of the Housing sub-sectors (e.g. student housing, multi-family housing, single-family-housing, senior housing, extra-care..) across Europe while equally expanding its Alternatives footprint through the likes of self-storage and healthcare.

In addition to servicing internal capital requirements, the candidate will collaborate closely with the Sector Head and Head of Portfolio Management on all key business development initiatives. A key focus area is growing the 3rd party capital side of the HAST platform – hence active input in the creation of new strategies, cross-functional collaboration across the Nuveen platform (e.g. Product, Distribution..) and capital raising efforts.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Work with the Sector Head and broader SLT to identify and agree strategic priorities for the HAST platform – including (i) specific investment goals for existing mandates and funds, and (ii) business development priorities across the entire housing sector.

  • Implement best-in-class practices as it relates to transactional processes, deal sourcing, underwriting and transaction execution. In parallel, responsibility for stakeholder management to facilitate clinical approvals at both the capital and internal Nuveen Investment Committee levels.

  • Establishing a direct network of contacts within the market and identifying target acquisitions through direct origination channels.

  • Close collaboration with the European platform to leverage network and identify innovative investment opportunities.

  • Building a comprehensive understanding on the emerging trends and market characteristics of Europe’s housing sectors to help orientate both existing and new strategies.

  • Contribute to thought leadership initiatives, alongside other key business functions, to support marketing campaigns.

  • Line management of the pan-European investment team – overall responsibility for their management and delivery of key objectives.

  • Ad hoc support for the Portfolio Management team and broader HAST team as required.

Technical Skills & Qualifications Required

  • 10+ years’ real estate experience, either within an investment management / private equity fund or investment bank.

  • Significant experience in the housing sector, operational real estate as well as multi-geographical transactions would be highly advantageous.

  • A genuine interest in expanding knowledge across sub-segments of the housing sector, with an intellectual curiosity to challenge norms and consider how changing consumer behaviors and lifestyle choices could influence future investment performance.

  • Organised, diligent and detail orientated, able to effectively manage multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously.

  • Strong financial modelling skills including the ability to build financial models from scratch.

  • Strong written communication and presentation skills, able to distill high volumes of information and communicate succinctly in verbal presentations and marketing materials.

  • Personable, team player with a willingness to support other team members when called upon.

  • An independent and innovative thinker with strong leadership skills and team oriented mindset.

  • Interest/passion in the “future of housing” and how technology, service and sustainability will impact the sector in the future.
