About the Position

Nuveen is seeking a Trader in its Global Fixed Income Group for our New York, NY location to primarily focus on Emerging and International markets. The Fixed Income Trading team is responsible for best execution & trade support for numerous Nuveen fixed income portfolio mandates that collectively manage over $500 billion in fixed income assets. In aggregate, Nuveen’s Public Fixed Income team manages approximately $16 billion in Emerging and International assets, and during 2021, the EM trading team executed over $7 billion in trading volume, not including FX business.

The successful candidate will be an energetic and extremely flexible individual and a contributing member of a highly successful group of professionals focused on investing in Emerging and International markets. The role is an opportunity to learn from and support senior traders and portfolio managers while delivering best execution strategies and providing value-added service for the broader investment teams across a range of portfolio mandates, including: TIAA General Account, Mutual Funds, Insurance Portfolios and separately managed accounts.Â

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Complete trade execution and processing with strong attention to details.

  • Primarily work with the senior EM traders and initially focus on developing the skill-set and relative value framework to achieve best-execution across the Emerging and International markets.

  • Partner with Senior Traders Trading team with trade entry, ticketing, allocations, corporate actions.

  • Develop and exhibit general EM market knowledge across external, local and FX markets and can be innovative and utilize strong excel skills to monitor markets.

  • Work across investment teams on a daily basis, communicating with multiple Portfolio Managers, Research analysts & Sr. Traders.

  • Understand TIAA’s investment goals, divergent portfolio mandates and present relative value ideas to portfolio managers.

  • Contribute market color and spread data to investment discussions. Understand how flows in one asset class may impact spreads in related asset classes.

  • Track spreads and other market data for portfolio managers and research analysts. Point out relationships across markets and potential trades that arise from those relationships.

  • Interact internally with portfolio managers and research team to vet offerings, discuss relative value and make suitable recommendation to appropriate portfolio mandates.

  • Answer dealer phone lines and build upon relationships with existing Wall Street sales coverage.

  • Interact with various business partners internally, including Middle Office, Valuations, Derivative Services, Risk/Compliance, and Technology.

  • Work independently and is able to manage multiple tasks on the trading desk simultaneously.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years fixed income experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years fixed income/emerging market experience.

  • Strong quantitative, analytical, communication and financial modeling abilities.

  • Detailed knowledge and ability with Excel and PowerPoint required, use of Bloomberg (API), or relevant market data vendors preferred.

  • Working knowledge of fixed income and Emerging Markets, Developed Markets, FX Markets.

  • Ability to assess facts and make quick decisions in a trading environment.

  • Comfortable with using basic investment/trading platforms: Bloomberg, Charles River, MarketAxess & TradeWeb and the ability to quickly learn any required internal applications.

  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail and high operational accuracy.

  • Collaborative work style, teamwork oriented.

Potential Salary: $128,700.00 USD

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).Â
